KM in Six Sigma
About Six Sigma

Refer to Wikipedia for the definition and details on Six Sigma. The details on the two methodologies in Six Sigma are listed below to give you insights on Six Sigma.

Note: The following details are also taken from the Wikipedia.

DMAIC:

  • Define - formally define the process improvement goals that are consistent with customer demands and enterprise strategy.
  • Measure to define baseline measurements on current process for future comparison.
  • Analyze to verify relationship and causality of factors.
  • Improve optimize the process based upon the analysis using techniques like Design of Experiments.
  • Control setup pilot runs to establish process capability, transition to production and thereafter continuously measure the process.

DMADV:

  • Define formally define the goals of the design activity that are consistent with customer demands and enterprise strategy.
  • Measure identify CTQs, product capabilities, production process capability, risk assessment, etc.
  • Analyze develop and design alternatives, create high-level design and evaluate design capability to select the best design.
  • Design develop detail design, optimize design, and plan for design verification. This phase may require simulations.
  • Verify design, setup pilot runs, implement production process and handover to process owners.
Role of KM in Six Sigma
  1. It requires a knowledge base to manage the information, opinion, comments, findings and so on in each of the stages.
  2. Collaborative systems are necessary to collective define, measure, analyze and find best ways to improve or optimize the process
  3. Scientific or system driven approach help converge the thoughts around process, quality and continuous improvements
  4. Lessons learned during the simulation and real-life exercises can be effectively managed and shared using KM practices.
  5. The project knowledge management approaches will be useful for effectively managing the quality projects.

Key Points

"Sigma is like a measurement, used to determine how good or bad the performance of a process is; in other words, how many mistakes a company makes, doing whatever it does."

"If you want to improve something, you have to know where you stand and where you want to go, or else it isn't going to happen. Numbers bring clarity,"
